China tests largest superconducting fusion magnet

China has finished testing the largest superconducting fusion magnet to date, a D-shaped coil about 21 meters long, 12 meters wide and weighing 582 tonnes, with a 6.5-tesla field, a 60-kiloampere current and 6.03 megajoules of stored energy. Built domestically with 47 patents after six years of engineering, the coil will be one of 16 magnets for the BEST tokamak and represents roughly 80 percent of the magnet work. The magnet will be kept at 4 kelvin while plasma reaches about 100 million degrees Celsius, and BEST aims for completion around 2027 with pilot electricity experiments by 2030.
