NASA to launch Roman space telescope next week
The Roman space telescope, named for Nancy Grace Roman, will launch on the 30th aboard a SpaceX rocket and deploy about 1.5 million km from Earth. The 12 m by 4 m observatory cost about 3 billion dollars and carries a 2.4 m primary mirror like Hubble but a field of view 100 times wider. It also carries a coronagraph that NASA says will suppress starlight up to 1,000 times better, enabling direct imaging of exoplanets, atmospheric studies, and wide surveys of over one billion galaxies over an estimated 10-year service life.
