Heatwaves cause 2,877 excess deaths in England

Rapid early assessment by UKHSA estimates 2,877 heat-associated deaths during two hot periods in May and June 2026, with 753 deaths linked to 24–27 May and 2,124 linked to 21–28 June. The June heatwave lasted eight days and triggered a red heat-health alert, only the second time that highest alert level has been issued in England. Both months set monthly temperature records, including 31.5C at Kew Gardens on 26 May and 37.7C at Lingwood on 26 June. Figures are interim and could make 2026 the deadliest heat year on record; finalised data will appear in the annual report in early 2027.
