Federal government increases immigration arrests nationwide

Federal immigration arrests rose sharply in early July, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement booking an average of 1,593 people per day during the first two weeks of the month, among the highest recent rates. ICE data released July 20 show national detention totals climbed above 65,000 in early July and nearly 43,000 bookings in June, while Michigan held 1,629 detainees and roughly 84 percent had no criminal records. The figures accompany a policy push to increase arrests, continuing use of segregation for some detainees, and reported plans to add detention capacity.

ICE averaged about 1,593 arrests per day in early July.
