Court of Appeal affirms jail term for former NEXIM managing director
An appellate court in Abuja on Tuesday unanimously dismissed former Nigeria Export-Import Bank managing director Roberts Orya’s appeal, affirming a Federal Capital Territory High Court conviction and concurrent 10-year jail sentence on 49 counts of obtaining money by false pretences, forgery and advance fee fraud. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had arraigned him in 2021, alleging he diverted N2.4 billion through fraudulent loan awards, including payments of N488 million and N630 million tied to companies such as Treasure Mix Construction and Luxurium Leisure Services. The decision leaves the trial court judgment intact and reinforces the EFCC’s prosecution outcome.
Court of Appeal upheld a 10-year sentence for Roberts Orya.
Context
The EFCC charged Orya in 2021. A trial judge convicted him in February 2026 after a four-year trial. The appeal was dismissed and the sentence will remain.
