European Commission finds Meta in breach of Digital Services Act

2 min read

The European Commission has preliminarily found Meta in breach of the Digital Services Act over what it calls the addictive design of Instagram and Facebook. The probe targets features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications and highly personalized recommender systems, saying Meta did not adequately assess risks to users' physical and mental wellbeing, including minors and vulnerable adults. The commission says time management tools and the safety center do not sufficiently mitigate risks and recommends disabling autoplay and infinite scroll by default, adding screen time breaks and adapting recommenders. Meta may now defend itself and faces possible fines up to 6% of global turnover if confirmed.
