EU brings AI Act into full force

The European Union on the 2nd put its AI Act into full effect, imposing differentiated rules by risk level and immediate requirements that newly released AI-generated content be labeled and that users be told when they interact with chatbots. Existing systems have a grace period until December 2 to comply. The commission created an AI Office to test general-purpose models and enforce the law, and violations can draw corrective orders and fines up to 7% of global turnover or €34 million. Additional measures, including bans on certain sexual deepfakes and high-risk model rules, phase in by December, and the act is raising transatlantic trade tensions.
