Frugal EU states seek cuts to EU 2027-2034 budget
Germany, Austria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden met in Berlin, with the Netherlands and Sweden joining by video, to press for cuts to the European Commission's nearly €2 trillion 2027-2034 budget proposal but they failed to agree on how much to cut. The so-called frugal group argues for redirecting spending toward competitiveness and defence and says it finances around 40% of the budget. Rival "Friends of Cohesion" want to protect agriculture, fisheries and regional funding. Ireland must now produce a fresh compromise before the mid-October European Council summit as leaders aim for a deal by year-end.
