Rescuers intensify efforts to reach workers trapped in Nepali hydropower tunnels
Rescue teams in Nepal are racing to reach hundreds of workers believed trapped inside hydropower tunnels after floods on 26 August. The Independent Power Producers' Association in Nepal reported 537 people still unaccounted for at nine projects, after 361 were rescued from an initial 898 missing. The worst-affected site is the 216 MW Upper Trishuli-1 project where about 300 are believed inside a tunnel. Mud, debris, damaged infrastructure, terrain and bad weather have slowed work, prompting Nepal to accept technical help from India, China and South Korea and to airlift heavy equipment to affected sites.
