Nigerian surgeon performs first tele-robotic surgery
Nigeria completed its first tele-robotic surgery when a urology professor remotely performed a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy to remove a cancerous kidney tumor, operating from Redeemer's Health Village in Ogun State while the patient was at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja about 500 kilometres away. The roughly three-hour operation used a Chinese-made Toumai robotic system with Starlink as the primary internet link and MTN broadband as a backup. Medical teams reported minimal blood loss and a good recovery, and hospital leaders say the feat shows tele-robotics can extend specialist surgical care to locations lacking local expertise.
