Ministry updates Kinneret bathing guidance after amoeba case
The health ministry updated bathing recommendations at the Kinneret after a confirmed Naegleria fowleri infection in a nine-year-old who is hospitalized in severe condition at Rambam Hospital with encephalitis, sedated and on a ventilator; laboratory testing confirmed the amoeba and an investigation found the child had swum at Kursi Beach about a week before hospitalization. The ministry said the disease is extremely rare but often fatal, occurs when contaminated water enters the nose, and is not spread by drinking water or person-to-person contact. It urged precautions, called for clear beach signage, and warned that water sampling cannot ensure safety.
