Spain records hottest summer as thousands die
Spain recorded its hottest summer on record from June 1 to Aug. 31, with a mainland average temperature of 26C, 2.5C above the 1991–2020 average, and four separate heat waves. Temperatures were above normal on 95% of days, including 33 exceptionally hot days and 32 very hot days, and 49 consecutive above-normal days from June 6 to July 24. Spain's mortality monitoring system attributed 5,111 deaths to high temperatures in June–August, the highest summer toll on record, with only 21% occurring during official heat waves. Hundreds of daily high and nighttime records were broken and warnings continued into September.
