Drug-resistant Candida auris spreads across United States
The fungal pathogen Candida auris has produced more than 4,500 reported infections across 28 U.S. states in 2026, and California reported the most cases with 972 so far, according to CDC data. The yeast can cause severe illness and spreads easily among very sick patients in healthcare facilities, and many strains are resistant to common antifungal medicines. From 2017 to 2022, 34 percent of reported cases resulted in death. Public health authorities list prevention steps such as hand cleaning, patient isolation, room disinfection and protective gowns, but treatment can require high doses or multiple antifungal drugs.
