Europe heatwaves cause thousands of deaths
Europe experienced a historically hot summer of repeated heatwaves and drought that led to sharp rises in heat-related deaths and strained infrastructure. Germany reported about 14,000 heat-related deaths this summer, including roughly 9,600 in one late-June week when temperatures exceeded 40C, the Robert Koch Institute said. Spain registered nearly 4,500 heat-related deaths since 1 June and France reported more than 7,300 excess deaths over the same period. The heat also fuelled wildfires, reduced crop yields and lowered river levels for cargo shipping, while German ministers pressed for constitutional adaptation measures and large hospital investment.
