Ebola cases surpass 3,200 in Democratic Republic of Congo

The World Health Organization reports more than 3,200 confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, making this the third-largest recorded outbreak and likely to grow. The epidemic began in May 2026 and is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has already spread to several provinces and into Uganda. Over 1,400 people have died as reported, and nearly 80 percent of cases are outside known contact lists, complicating tracing. With no approved vaccines or treatments for this strain, researchers quickly developed a candidate using Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID vaccine technology and other vaccine and experimental therapies are advancing.
