Mudslide hits Tibet-Nepal border, hundreds missing
Rescuers in China advanced toward the epicentre of a large mudslide on the Tibet-Nepal border after a lake created by the slide began discharging and was described as essentially drained. The wave of mud and debris hit Gyirong on Wednesday, killing at least seven and leaving 554 people missing in that area, with officials saying 260 foreigners remain unaccounted. The US Geological Survey attributed the disaster to a glacial collapse. About 2,141 rescuers were near the site and more than 500 reached the worst-hit area, but rain, closed roads and rugged terrain are hindering work.
