Air pollution linked to higher suicide risk
A new analysis published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health reviewed more than 40 studies on air, noise, light and water pollution and their links to suicidal ideation, attempts and death by suicide. It found evidence that short-term exposure to small particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and PM2.5 increase the risk of suicidal thoughts, attempts and death. The authors said environmental exposures may be modifiable risk factors and called for further research on cumulative exposures, while noting the study does not prove causality.
