Namibia launches training to reduce postpartum haemorrhage deaths
Namibia has launched a national training-of-trainers programme to scale up postpartum haemorrhage care after a confidential enquiry covering April 2021 to March 2024 found that 54% of maternal deaths were preventable. The review identified critical gaps in nearly 80% of maternal death records, including delays in recognising clinical deterioration and poor referral practices. Maternal mortality has fallen from over 450 to 139 deaths per 100,000 live births since 2000 but remains almost double the SDG target. Direct obstetric complications account for 60.7% of deaths and obstetric haemorrhage 16%, prompting use of a WHO-recommended PPH care bundle.
