Texas allows Classic Learning Test consideration for some applicants

Texas officials have opened the door for the conservative-backed Classic Learning Test to be considered alongside the SAT and ACT for many public university applicants outside the state's automatic top 10% admissions program, after Commissioner Wynn Rosser told university leaders they can immediately consider CLT scores. A Texas A&M Public Policy Research Institute study said the CLT, SAT and ACT meet sufficient rigor, but an independent review rated the CLT much lower for predicting college success (1.4 of 4 versus 3.8 for the ACT and 4.0 for the SAT). The coordinating board has not approved rule changes and will consider final rules by January 2027, with the CLT potentially becoming an official option for the 2028–29 cycle.

Texas will permit CLT consideration for many non-top-10% applicants.
