South Africa launches factory to build AI tutor robots

The South African Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and private firm BSG and Technologies opened a manufacturing facility at Dube TradePort in Durban to build IRIS humanoid tutor robots. CEO Thandoh Gumede said the devices will assist teachers with marking, curriculum analysis and explaining concepts in the country’s 11 official languages, not replace them, and are controlled by keyboard or voice input with a chest display and speakers. Officials said the project could support industrial development and create about 20 000 jobs, while the education system faces some 27 000 vacant teaching posts.
