Syria education ministry allows Kurdish teaching in schools
On August 27 the Syrian Education Ministry amended executive instructions for Decree No. 13 of 2026 to allow Kurdish to be taught as a national language in public and private schools in areas where Kurds make up a significant share of the population. Kurdish will be taught at all educational levels via two courses: language classes held three times weekly that count toward final scores, and a weekly activities course. The ministry tasked the National Center for Educational Curriculum Development to prepare curricula and ordered teacher proficiency tests and flexible hiring rules to meet needs.
