Federal ministry approves SSCE exam fee increase to N50,000

Federal education authorities approved a uniform N50,000 registration fee for the senior secondary certificate examination (SSCE) administered by NECO and WAEC, to take effect for internal candidates from 2027. A June 18, 2026 memo signed by the director of senior secondary education conveyed the minister's approval after a March 31, 2026 meeting where the fee review was discussed. The change raises NECO's fee from N30,000 and WAEC's from N27,000. It is expected to increase debts owed by some state governments that pay exam fees and to risk lower registrations where governments do not cover the higher cost.
