Jeffco Public Schools sues U.S. Department of Education

2 min read

Jeffco Public Schools has sued the U.S. Department of Education after the department threatened to withhold more than $50 million, alleging Title IX violations for allowing male students on girls' team rosters and permitting opposite-sex bathroom use and overnight accommodations. Jefferson County says it is following state law that bans discrimination against transgender students and disputes DOE claims, saying males listed on some rosters were coaches, trainers and mascots rather than athletes. The district asks a judge to clarify how to comply without violating state or federal law as the investigation and funding threat continue.
