UN reports cholera, aid cuts and Sri Lanka prison deaths

4 min read

The UN reported a deadly cholera outbreak in Sudan with more than 1,330 confirmed cases and 114 deaths and an extremely high case fatality rate of 13.7 percent, while access to the key North Kordofan city of El-Obeid is blocked and supplies cannot reach people at risk ahead of the rainy season. UN Women warned that aid cuts since January 2025 have left at least one million women and girls without critical services, citing responses from 855 women-led groups across 52 crisis countries. The UN human rights office also urged prompt, independent investigations after Negombo prison riots in Sri Lanka killed at least 23 people.
