Senior British counterterrorism officials warned that technology and online platforms are increasingly used to threaten the United Kingdom by hostile states, extremists and far-right groups, with Islamic extremism still the largest risk but notable growth in state-backed and far-right activity. Officials cited specific cases including Iranian-linked assassination plots, convictions for spying for China, and an arson plot described as fitting Russian state-backed sabotage, plus recruitment on Telegram by the Wagner Group. Police said over 20 Iranian-backed plots were recorded in 2025 and that teenagers have been arrested, and they urged greater cooperation from technology companies as investigations continue.
