Russia strikes locomotive near Poland border
Russia struck railway infrastructure near the Polish border, directly hitting a locomotive in Volyn Oblast, Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said on 15 September. Sybiha said over 500 Ukrainian locomotives have been damaged or destroyed since the full-scale invasion, with more than half of those losses occurring this year and over 250 lost in 2026 alone. Ukraine appealed for replacement locomotives compatible with its 1,520 mm rail gauge and for financing to accelerate purchases, saying railways remain essential for civilian travel, evacuations and moving grain as drone strikes expand into western and border regions.
