Putin visits island claimed by Japan
Russian president Vladimir Putin visited the disputed island known in Russia as Iturup and in Japan as Etorofu after attending the final stage of Pacific Fleet drills in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, his first trip to the island chain under Russian control since 1945. He toured a fish-processing plant and was given caviar, according to Russian media. Tokyo lodged a protest, with Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi saying the Northern Territories are Japan's territory under international law and that the visit offends Japanese sentiments and makes medium- to long-term restoration of relations more difficult.
