More than 1,100 Israelis entered the courtyards of Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Sunday under heavy Israeli police protection, the Jerusalem Governorate said, while Palestinian officials reported restrictions on Muslim worshippers' access. The Governorate put the number at 1,143 and said visitors entered through the Mughrabi Gate in successive groups, and that the gate was later closed; it also reported some visitors performed Talmudic rituals and that only four mourners were briefly allowed into a funeral prayer. The visits follow Israeli policy changes this year on prayer pages and books and have drawn criticism from Jordan and Palestinian officials.
