Fighting in Yemen has intensified as the Iran-backed Houthi militia seeks ground near Mokha, aiming to strengthen control over vessel traffic through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The group announced a July blockade targeting Saudi oil tankers and has carried out missile and drone strikes on ships and Saudi infrastructure from northern strongholds. Clashes pit the Houthis against forces loyal to the Saudi-backed internationally recognized government, with Mokha currently held by Lieutenant General Tareq Saleh. Analysts warn the push could disrupt Red Sea shipping and oil markets because Saudi Arabia has shifted much export traffic into the Red Sea after the Strait of Hormuz was effectively shut.
