Anthropic publishes metrics showing AI leads research
Anthropic published a set of measurement tools and data to quantify three core aspects of AI development: the degree to which AI builds new models, oversight of AI agent actions, and compute allocation for safety. The company created an AI R&D Automation Index from AL0 to AL5 and reported Claude reached AL4 "leads" for 26% of its measured R&D, with over 90% at AL3 or above. Anthropic said roughly 30,000 agents ran on its main platform in August, that 100% of agent actions pass an online monitor, and that about 6% of R&D compute was used for safety work.

Context
Company leaders recently urged a slowdown in frontier AI development. Anthropic published public metrics to show autonomy, monitoring, and compute use. Other labs could publish similar numbers and public debate or policy steps could follow.
