NYPD will take down unauthorized drones at US Open
The NYPD announced it is prepared to neutralize unauthorized drones over the 146th US Open after Congress passed the Safer Skies Act, which took effect in July and granted new independent legal authority for local drone mitigation. Commissioner Jessica Tisch said this will be the first major U.S. event where state or local police conduct independent mitigation operations. Deputy commissioner Rebecca Weiner said officers will use their own people, tools and equipment to electronically neutralize drones, alongside a federal temporary flight restriction. The announcement precedes expanded patrols, barriers, light towers and screening for more than 1.2 million attendees.
