Wildfires burn peatland across Indonesia
Large wildfires have burned more than 200,000 hectares across Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo, generating thick toxic smoke, transboundary haze and major carbon emissions during a forecast “super” El Niño. Authorities have detected over 23,000 satellite hotspots, deployed more than 50 aircraft for cloud seeding and water-bombing, and linked the fires to more than 50,000 respiratory infections, while Copernicus reported nearly 49 million tons of carbon released in three weeks. Experts warn peatland blazes are hard to extinguish and could rival 2015’s catastrophic season, and the fires may continue until the rainy season arrives.
