Glacier collapse triggers deadly floods in Nepal and Tibet

Drone footage recorded by a Chinese photographer captured a large mass of bedrock and glacier ice detaching from a slope near Langtang Lirung, more than 7,200 metres above sea level, and falling about 1,200 metres into the valley. The collapse produced huge dust plumes and a deluge of ice, rock, mud and debris that triggered flash floods on August 26, heavily swelling the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers. The floods killed 903 people in Nepal and 16 in Tibet, with more than 4,500 still missing mostly in Nepal; authorities face adverse weather, difficult terrain and ongoing risks while they assess losses.
