Scientists find winter temperature thresholds that accelerate lake ice loss

Researchers analyzed ice records and air temperature data from 724 lakes (2000–2022) and found that lake ice loss is not always gradual: when average winter air temperatures cross a band of about −13.7 to −6.8°C, ice loss can accelerate sharply, increasing by as much as 22 times. Warming advances spring melt more than it delays fall freeze-up, so ice disappears earlier overall. The paper warns that under a high-emission pathway, many more Northern Hemisphere lakes could cross these thresholds, shortening ice seasons by roughly 40 days and affecting water quality, aquatic ecosystems, and communities that rely on stable winter ice.
