UVM wins NSF grant to build connectomics observatory
The University of Vermont received a $19 million National Science Foundation grant to create the National Connectomics and Ultrastructure Volume Observatory, led by neurology professor Davi Bock. About $16 million will fund Bock's work and $3 million will support University of California San Diego contributions from its Supercomputing Center and National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research. Over five years the observatory will produce three-dimensional maps of nervous tissue, piloting studies of mouse learning, shark vision and parasite function, building on Bock's 2024 fruit fly brain map and aiming to scale toward larger brains in the long term.
