Study finds Mercury has shrunk far more
New research suggests Mercury has contracted much more than previously thought, possibly losing up to 14.5 miles of diameter since its formation compared with prior estimates of 2.5 to 10 miles. Scientists attribute the greater estimate to asteroid and comet impacts that produced debris and roughened terrain, which obscured wrinkle-like surface features used to measure planetary shrinkage. The team reached its conclusion by combining earlier geological maps with newer maps that account for the roughened surface. The result affects interpretations of Mercury's core composition and will be tested further when BepiColombo arrives in 2026.
