Europe launches MTG-I2 imager satellite
Europe launched the second Meteosat Third Generation imager satellite, MTG-I2, on Ariane 6 flight VA270 from French Guiana on 27 August. The satellite separated and made contact with the Malindi ground station, and teams will perform solar array deployment, attitude control activation and orbit-raising manoeuvres before commissioning. MTG-I2 carries a flexible combined imager that will deliver rapid 2.5-minute scans over Europe and northern Africa and a lightning imager that captures individual strikes day and night. When commissioned it will join two existing MTG satellites to provide full operational capacity for improved forecasting and atmospheric monitoring.
MTG-I2 will provide 2.5-minute high-resolution imaging over Europe.
Context
Two earlier MTG satellites were already launched and commissioned. This launch completes the initial three-satellite system. The satellite will raise its orbit and then enter a commissioning phase before operations.
