Tsimerman emerges as leading contender for 2026 Fields Medal
4 min read

Jacob Tsimerman, a University of Toronto mathematics professor, is widely seen as a leading candidate for the 2026 Fields Medal after major contributions to number theory and Shimura varieties. In 2021 he and colleagues Jonathan Pila and Ananth Shankar proved the André-Oort conjecture, and his research published last year on Shimura varieties drew further surprise and praise. Colleagues say the methods introduced could help prove other major conjectures. If he wins, he would likely become the first Fields Medal recipient to have established his academic career while based in Canada; winners will be announced at the ICM in July 2026.
