Microalgae bloom halts multiple Israeli desalination plants
A large microalgae bloom that stretched more than a dozen miles is blamed for temporarily shutting five of Israel's six coastal desalination plants, with only one plant at full capacity several days later. Desalination supplies at least 65% of Israel's drinking water, so officials activated alternate sources including the Sea of Galilee, groundwater wells and national reserves while some plants resumed partial operation. Scientists tied the bloom to an unusual mix of factors, including a sea storm that increased turbidity and raised sea temperatures to about 86°F, and warned that climate change could make such events more common.
