Regional mediators seek to ease US-Iran tensions

2 min read

Regional governments including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt have been contacting both the United States and Iran to reduce an escalation and to press for renewed technical negotiations, Axios reported. Multiple sources, including two from mediating countries and a US official, said mediators suspect recent attacks in the Strait of Hormuz were carried out by regime elements opposing a memorandum of understanding and intended to undermine it. Officials sought first to agree de-escalation and then to set a date for another negotiation round after Iran attacked three commercial vessels and reciprocal strikes hit US military infrastructure in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan, increasing regional tensions.
