India and Japan deepen defence and technology cooperation

India and Japan held their eighth Defence Policy Dialogue in Tokyo on July 13, 2026, with delegations led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Vice Minister Kano Koji discussing deeper cooperation in defence industrial collaboration, military-to-military exchanges, maritime cooperation, cyber security and space. The dialogue reviewed progress since the previous meeting, welcomed steady expansion of defence ties and reiterated commitment to a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific, while noting forthcoming ministerial visits including a 2+2 later this year. The meeting followed Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi's July 1–3 visit to India and included ceremonial and diplomatic exchanges.
