Bangladesh schedules presidential election for August 20

Bangladesh's Election Commission announced a presidential election for August 20 after Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on July 24 following sustained pressure after the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government. Candidates must file nominations on August 13, face scrutiny on August 16, and can withdraw by August 18; if only one candidate is nominated the commission will declare them elected unopposed on August 18. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will act as returning officer. Under the Presidential Election Act, 1991, the commission must hold an election within 90 days and the president is chosen indirectly by members of parliament.

A presidential election will be held on August 20 to fill the vacancy.
