EU forces board tanker linked to Russian shadow fleet
European Union enforcement troops under Operation Irini boarded the tanker MV Sun in Mediterranean waters west of Pantelleria to verify the vessel's flag, after suspicions it was part of a Russian 'shadow fleet' selling oil in possible violation of international law. The Italian defense ministry said the Italian navy ship Thaon di Revel carried out the boarding as MV Sun travelled from Cotonou, Benin, to Istanbul. This is the sixth recent interdiction of such ships, occurring after an EU sanctions package that allows members to sell seized cargo and drawing Kremlin threats of reciprocal action.
