ASEAN foreign ministers meet Myanmar to discuss civil war

2 min read

As ASEAN chair, the Philippines will lead an informal meeting in Bangkok with Myanmar's foreign minister on Sunday, the first in-person contact since the 2021 coup and the generals' exclusion from bloc summits. The meeting comes amid a civil war in which an estimated 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced, and after an election that made Min Aung Hlaing president. The Philippine foreign ministry said ministers are expected to exchange views on ASEAN engagement with Myanmar and possible concrete steps on cessation of violence, constructive dialogue among concerned parties, and humanitarian assistance.

ASEAN will hold first in-person Myanmar talks since 2021 coup.
