Officials warn cychlorphine spreading across U.S. drug supply
A powerful synthetic opioid called cychlorphine is spreading through the U.S. illicit drug supply and may be up to ten times stronger than fentanyl, federal officials said. The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy reported the drug in every U.S. region, with most detections in Ohio, Texas and Tennessee, and linked at least 55 deaths in 2025 and 2026, including 41 Tennessee deaths. Cychlorphine, part of a new orphine family, appears alone and mixed with fentanyl and other drugs, can be hidden in fake pills, and is not detected by routine strips or hospital urine screens, requiring specialized testing.
