Nigeria records 259 Lassa fever deaths in 2026
Nigeria has recorded 259 deaths and 1,086 confirmed Lassa fever cases across 24 states and 118 local government areas in 2026, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention week 36 report covering August 31 to September 6. The case-fatality rate of 23.9 percent is higher than the 18.6 percent recorded in the same period in 2025, driven in part by late presentation, high treatment costs, poor sanitation and low community awareness. Five states—Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo—account for 87 percent of cases, and the NCDC has deployed rapid response teams and a 30-day healthcare worker protection plan.
