France records 5,764 excess deaths during June heatwave

France's public health agency said 21,674 people died from all causes during a June 17 to July 2 heatwave, versus 15,910 expected, producing 5,764 excess deaths or a 36 percent increase. The country saw its hottest June since records began in 1947 and national average temperatures peaked on June 24–25, with many regions above 40°C. More than half of excess deaths occurred June 25–27, the Paris region recorded 1,999 excess deaths, and people aged 75 and above accounted for around two-thirds of excess mortality; hospitals and mortuaries faced major strain and figures remain preliminary.
