Ai detects heart disease from routine mammograms
A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting found an artificial intelligence model could identify women at higher risk of three common cardiovascular diseases using routine mammograms. Researchers analysed 97,364 mammography exams from 29,921 women (median age 54) and extracted clinical records on hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and stroke, with prevalences of 16%, 2.5% and 2.5% respectively. The model yielded AUROCs of 0.79 for hypertension, 0.78 for ischaemic heart disease and 0.86 for stroke, with consistent results across cancer status and age, but authors say further validation is needed before clinical use.
