Federal government moves forward on $267 million Winnipeg lab

The federal government has taken the first step on a planned $267 million medical countermeasures laboratory in Winnipeg by awarding a $10-million contract for architecture and engineering services to Winnipeg-based Architecture49 Inc. The new facility, slated for completion in 2033 and to be built next to the National Microbiology Laboratory, is intended to expand capacity to develop vaccines, treatments and diagnostic tools. Officials say it will strengthen national and international outbreak response capability, building on local experience responding to SARS, H1N1, Ebola and COVID-19.
