England nears elimination of hepatitis C
England says it is close to eliminating hepatitis C after expanded testing in accident and emergency departments, GP registration checks and free home testing kits helped find previously undiagnosed cases. NHS England reports it has treated more than 100,000 people since 2015 and has already surpassed the World Health Organization benchmark of treating 80% of known cases, while deaths linked to the virus have fallen 36% in ten years. Short antiviral courses of eight to 12 weeks cure more than 95% of cases, and officials urge at-risk groups to test so elimination can be completed.
